"Light peach colour. Spicy, savoury nose with complex layers of earth and smoke over dark berry and plum fruit. Deep-pitched flavours with noticeable weight build on the firmly structured, off-dry and smoky palate. Long, evolving finish. For Jules, Rosé isn't just a wine style — it is a wine that has changed how New Zealanders drink, moving from an afterthought to something people actively reach for. Her own picture of it is specific: dry, gorgeous, watermelon and berry fruit, but never overdone and always in balance.

AROMA & FLAVOUR

The smell of summer in a glass: loads of ripe raspberries, strawberries, watermelon and nectarines sit alongside yummy hints of vanilla and peach melba yoghurt. This dry Rosé is packed flavour and the delicious juicy acidity and lingering finish make this an ideal summer’s day sipper and will leave you reaching for another glass. Serve chilled.

Jules crafted this wine to be genuinely food-friendly, not an afterthought pink wine. It is bone dry, textural, and driven by concentrated fruits rather than sweetness.

Wine technical notes

VINTAGE NOTES

Merlot grapes for this wine come from silt/clay loam soils in the beautiful Patutahi Valley in Gisborne - the first wine region in New Zealand to see the rising sun each morning. However, the 2023-24 season was extremely challenging for our Gisborne growers, who had to be alert and agile throughout the season to protect their vines and avoid the disease threatened by the regular rainfall. It was a nail-biting season, but luckily our later-ripening Merlot survived the storms relatively unscathed. Jules supplemented the blend with some Pinot Noir grown in the Brancott Valley in Marlborough.
VINTAGE NOTES

VINIFICATION

Bunches of Merlot were machine-picked in the early morning to keep the grapes fresh and flavour-packed in the cooler temperatures. Once at the winery, the grapes were crushed and pressed immediately. They were then gently pressed off the skins and fermentation was kicked off with an aromatic yeast. Temperatures were kept cool to preserve the delicate aromas. in 2024, we also harvested a parcel of Pinot Noir from Marlborough which was treated the same way as the Merlot. At the end of fermentation, the two wines were blended and settled for a time, stabilised and given a light filtration to preserve the beautiful pink hue and sealed with a screw cap for maximum flavour and freshness!

FAQs

Is this wine vegan-friendly?

Yes - all Jules' white and rosé wines are vegan-friendly.

Is this a dry or sweet Rosé?

Bone dry, despite the ripe summer-fruit character. Many people assume Rosé tends to be a little sweeter than other styles, but not this one!

Does the colour tell you if a Rosé is sweet or dry?

No - the colour comes from the grape variety, and how long the grape juice is left on the skins to absorb their colour. Jules presses her grapes almost immediately to give a very pale coloured rosé, that is also bone dry - but those two facts are not necessarily linked.

What grapes is this Rosé made from?

It is a blend of Merlot and Pinot Noir. It's an unusual blend that Jules feels gives her the perfect balance of juicy fruit and weight on the palate whilst also giving an elegant, juicy, dry finish.

Where do the grapes come from?

Jules harvests Merlot from Gisborne's Patutahi Valley - the first New Zealand region to see the sunrise each day - and blends it with some Pinot Noir grown here in Marlborough.

How long has Jules been making Rosé?

Since 2009 — a good five years or so before NZ's rosé boom in the mid 2010s.

When did Rosé become popular in New Zealand?

Later than you'd think - the real boom came in the mid-2010s. Domestic sales jumped 45% in 2016 alone, with entries to the Air NZ Wine Awards also surging that year.
